The upcoming film Abir Gulal, featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Indian actress Vaani Kapoor, has sparked controversy as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, has opposed its release in India.

Directed by Aarati Bagadi, the film is scheduled to hit theatres on May 9, but its release now seems uncertain. MNS has stated that they will not allow the movie to be screened in India, maintaining their stand against Pakistani artists working in the country. The party argues that Pakistan supports terrorism, and allowing its actors in Indian films benefits them financially.

MNS has reiterated its opposition to Pakistani artists working in India, stating, “We will not allow Pakistani actors to work here. Pakistan supports terrorism, and this goes against our country. We will not let them gain fame, recognition, or financial benefits in India.” The party has consistently opposed cultural collaborations with Pakistan, and Abir Gulal has now become its latest target.

Indian film bodies have also raised concerns about the film. Ashoke Pandit, President of the Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association, pointed out that Abeer Gulal is not backed by an Indian studio. He also emphasized that producer associations have opposed working with Pakistani artists since the Pulwama attack.

Ashoke Pandit stated that while there is no official ban on Pakistani artists working in India, the film industry has voluntarily chosen not to collaborate with them. He urged the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to review Abeer Gulal and warned that Indian filmmakers who work with Pakistani actors may face a boycott from industry technicians in the future.

BN Tiwari, President of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees, admitted that he was unaware of the film but assured that discussions with the filmmakers would be held before any final decision.

Despite opposition from several film associations, the Indian government has not explicitly banned Pakistani artists from working in the country. Actor Imran Zahid had earlier filed an RTI request with multiple ministries seeking clarity on the issue, but none provided a clear response. He highlighted that the absence of an official directive has led to confusion in the industry, making it difficult for filmmakers and artists to decide on collaborations with Pakistani talent.
