In a small town in India, a wedding was cancelled at the last moment because the groom’s family demanded food for 600 guests, which the bride’s family couldn’t afford. The story went viral after the bride’s brother posted about it on Reddit, asking for legal advice.

He mentioned that the marriage was arranged through relatives and everything was going smoothly until the groom’s side insisted on a large-scale feast. The bride’s family couldn’t meet the demand, and the groom’s family called off the wedding.

The Reddit post, titled “Marriage cancelled at last minute due to ‘dowry’,” sparked widespread outrage and discussion online. The bride’s brother wrote on Reddit, “I never thought I’d be in this situation. My sister was engaged to a guy we knew through relatives. We live in a very small town where the panchayat still plays a big role. In our town, weddings usually happen in two ways, either a grand mutton biryani-style celebration that can cost over ₹10–15 lakhs or a simple evening tea ceremony.”

He explained that in the beginning, both families had agreed to pay for their own guests’ meals. But just before the wedding, the groom’s family suddenly insisted that the bride’s side cover food for all 600 guests. The bride’s family said they couldn’t afford the unexpected expense and informed the groom’s family, but the wedding was still called off.

The bride’s brother shared that his family just couldn’t afford the huge food cost. “We’re not rich. We told the groom’s side a few days ago that we couldn’t cover such a big expense. The wedding was planned for May, but they cancelled it just because we refused to spend lakhs of rupees and go into debt to meet their demands,” he wrote.

He also pointed out the irony that the groom’s family wasn’t financially well-off either. “They’re also poor. I don’t understand how they had the nerve to ask for money they couldn’t afford.”
He added that the groom called off the wedding over a phone call, which was recorded. In the call, the groom said, “We had to feed 600 people. Since you chose an evening ceremony, and we can’t afford the cost, we are cancelling the wedding.”

The bride’s brother said his mother and sister have been crying non-stop since the wedding was cancelled. His family is worried about taking legal action because they fear it might affect his sister’s reputation. He asked, “What should we do now? Should we go to the panchayat or court?”

He also said they have some proof. The groom’s family had given the bride a ring and saree during the engagement in front of many elders. They also have a recording of the groom calling off the wedding, which could help if they decide to take legal steps.
