Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has reacted to news that a banker was summoned for questioning by the police after watching his performance. Kamra apologized for the trouble and even offered to organize a holiday for the banker anywhere in India.

“I am deeply sorry for the inconvenience that attending my show has caused to you. Please email me so that I can schedule your next vacation anywhere you’d like in India,” Kamra posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The banker, who lives in Navi Mumbai’s Kharghar, was on a 17-day trip to Tamil Nadu and Kerala when the police called him. He was summoned back to Mumbai to be questioned regarding a defamation case against Kamra.

According to reports, the banker was called as a witness in the case linked to Kamra’s jokes about Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The banker told The Times of India that he was supposed to return on April 6 but had to cut his trip short on March 28 after repeated calls from the police.

“The officer who called me was sceptical about my out-of-town status and threatened to visit my Kharghar residence. This prompted me to cut short my trip and return early,” he said.

The banker also shared that the police questioned him about the possibility of editing Kamra’s show recording.

“Despite me saying that I had booked a ticket for the show online and that I had proof of booking, the cops said that I might have edited the video Kamra has recorded. Why will the comedian hand over his show’s video to me (for editing)?” he questioned.

Mumbai Police said that no official notices were issued to viewers who watched Kamra’s show, which was taped at Habitat Studio in Mumbai and uploaded on YouTube on March 24.

Kamra’s show, Naya Bharat, created a stir because of a parody of the song Bholi Si Surat, which was aimed at Eknath Shinde.

The outrage prompted Shinde’s supporters to ransack the studio in Khar. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) soon demolished sections of the studio, citing building law violations. The timing of this, however, raised eyebrows.

Kamra is currently facing three police cases related to his show. But the Madras High Court has provided him with protection from arrest until now. The scandal has caused political outrage, with the Opposition accusing the government of restricting free speech. The Maharashtra government has, however, justified its move by saying that “recklessness in the name of freedom won’t be tolerated.”
