A 30-year-old woman from Amroha district in Uttar Pradesh has married a higher secondary school student after converting to Hinduism. The woman, previously known as Shabnam, got married to an 18-year-old Class 12 student in a temple on Wednesday. She has now changed her name to Shivani.
According to police officials, Shivani is an orphan and has three children. She has been married twice before. Circle Officer Deep Kumar Pant of Hasanpur said her first marriage took place in Meerut but ended in divorce. Her second husband was Taufiq from Saidanwali village, who became disabled in a road accident in 2011.
Shivani separated from Taufiq legally just last Friday. Soon after the divorce, she adopted Hinduism and married the 18-year-old student.
Law enforcement officials are currently looking into the details of the marriage. However, no official complaints have been made so far.
Uttar Pradesh has a law called the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. This law prevents religious conversions through pressure, cheating, or fraud. Officials are making sure the marriage followed all the rules.
The student’s father, Dataram Singh, who is also from Saidanwali, said he supports his son’s decision. He told reporters, “We only hope that both live together peacefully.”
The marriage has caught public attention due to the age difference and religious conversion involved, but the family has expressed happiness over the couple’s decision.
