A 91-year-old man from Kerala has been granted bail by the High Court after being accused of stabbing his 88-year-old wife during a fight over alleged affairs. The man, named Thevan, was living with his wife Kunjali when problems started. She accused him of having relationships with other women, which reportedly made him feel hurt and angry.

Things took a serious turn on March 21, when Thevan allegedly attacked her with a knife, leaving her badly injured. He was arrested the same day and has been in jail since then. While reviewing his bail request, Justice P. V. Kunhikrishnan looked at the case not just from a legal point of view, but also reflected on it with a poetic touch.

While granting bail to 91-year-old Thevan, the Kerala High Court took a heartfelt and emotional approach. In its order dated April 10, the court said: “I do not want to make any further discussion on this. Let Thevan, aged 91, live happily with Kunjali, his wife aged 88, in their old age. Let there be a happy life for them.”

The court added that both should understand the value of their bond: “In old age, Thevan’s only strength is his wife and Kunjali’s only strength is her husband.”Acknowledging the pain between them, the judge said that growing old together only strengthens love: “Age does not dim the light of love, it makes it shine brighter. Even now, Kunjali loves her husband, which is why she still watches over him. As we grow older, our love only deepens.”

In a rare move, the court also quoted a poem by late Malayalam poet N. N. Kakkad from his last work Saphalamee Yathra, which talks about ageing, love, and peaceful companionship. The judge also made a touching statement: “A great marriage is not when a perfect couple comes together, but when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.”
